bees love honey too.

We see that bees love honey too. Here they devour a squash dessert that has been soaked in honey. The image is from this past weekend when I was in Valladolid working on the honey project. My friend Herbe Chim Ake recorded the 1.5 hour meeting which was mostly in Maya, except for a few Spanish words here and there. President of Lol-Kanchunub Cooperative, Raul Ché Puc, spoke about the need to earn a fair wage for their honey and our project to bring the honey to an international market.

hanal pixan

Yesterday I went to the Mérida cemetary for “Hanal Pixan,” the Maya version of “Day of the Dead.” I placed flowers on the grave of the socialist governor, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, who was executed by those who were afraid of his policies, including giving indigenous people rights. It was a sunny day so many Yucatecans were there to bring flowers and clean up the graves of their family members.
